Multidisiplinary Research Unit (ICMR)

Year of Initiation: 2012
Co-ordinator : Dr. Lahari Saikia, Professor, Dept. of Microbiology, Assam

The Multidisciplinary Research Unit at Assam Medical College & Hospital, Dibrugarh, is a Govt. of India initiative established with Grants-in-aid received from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi with a view to forward Bio-medical research in the region. This is the first Laboratory of its type in the region established under the Central Govt. initiative ‘Establishment of Multi-Disciplinary Research Units in Government Medical colleges/Research Institutions’ and was formally inaugurated by Dr. V.M. Katoch, Secretary to Govt. of India, Dept. of Health Research (MH&FW) & Director General, ICMR, on the 11th of May, 2013 in the esteemed presence of Dr. Atindra Kr. Adhikari, Principal-cum-chief Superintendent, Assam Medical College & Hospital, Dibrugarh.

Divisions and Facilities

The Research Unit at Assam Medical College has three broad sections – Biochemistry, Pathology and Microbiology; each with dedicated working areas. In addition, there is a dedicated Molecular Biology section with separate Pre and Post amplification rooms. The laboratory is equipped with Autoanalysers, automated cell-counter, PCR (conventional and Real-time) stations, Elisa readers and washers, Anaerobic culture system, Histopathology equipments, Deep freezers, Bio-Safety Cabinets, western blotting and water purification system and dedicated media preparation and sterilisation rooms.

The laboratory is currently being used for conducting research in the field of clinical medicine and basic science. It supports both intramural and extramural projects carried out under different clinical researchers of the institute. In addition, the laboratory facilities are also being used by Post-graduate students for carrying out their thesis related work. The laboratory is also utilised for generating preliminary data about important health problems with a view to generate funds for large-scale projects in the future.

Available Research Facilities

  • Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) (Conventional & Real-time quantitative)
  • Biochemical analysis
  • Routine Blood examination
  • Histo-pathological examination
  • Biobanking
  • Anaerobic/Microaerophilic culture
